The end, my friend.. Morgan Three Wheeler..

Ironic that the Devon and Cornwall police should take an interest in the Morgan Three Wheeler during what may be the last proper trip of the season.

I carry printouts of the Road Traffic Act and DVLA legislation covering the display of licence plates on tricycles should I be stopped. The UK police are the best in the world but there is little point in arguing with them at the roadside. Luckily, in Devon and Cornwall being shot for a motoring offence (or any offence) is as likely as being hit by space debris.

I had previously wondered if the Morgan M3W triggers a warning on the ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) fitted to some traffic cars as they often do a ‘double take’ as I burble past..

Nothing was said and it I didn’t feel it was the time to ask. So I later posed the question indirectly to a MET officer. It seems as far as they are concerned a vehicle registered as a tricycle such as the Morgan Three Wheeler does not require a front plate and ANPR only works if a plate is fitted.

In reality, it doesn’t matter what the law says but how it is interpreted by those that enforce it.

Idylls of the King?

Camelot and back again in a Morgan Three Wheeler

tintagel

King Arthur’s Tintagel is fairly local to us so an early morning Sunday run to clear the cobwebs with some salted ram air seemed a good idea. Rumbling through Tintagel in a Morgan Three Wheeler at early o’clock I noticed  more tourists than previous September’s, even so, autumn has definitely arrived. So a quick pause at the reputed birthplace of King Arthur then home along the coast road in time for lunch before the Emmets stir.

Emmet is the old English word for ant – Cornish dialect|pejorative) A tourist.

Morgan Three Wheeler –  King Arthurs Castle

idylls of the King

Following the publication of Alfred Lord Tennyson’s Idylls of the King in 1859 Victorians flocked to Tintagel and in 1899 the hotel overlooking the ruins opened. The Camelot Castle Hotel is now owned and run jointly by the Mappin family and the artist Ted Stourton. I  had met Ted some years previously while having coffee at the hotel waiting for a winter storm to pass.

From a distance his Jaguar artwork looks very similar to the M3W Popbangcolour we saw at the Morgan factory (inset).  They always seem very friendly here if somewhat eccentric.

L Ron Hubbard would be proud of them (even though he himself was barking)

Clearing the cobwebs in a Morgan Three Wheeler

The Atlantic Highway between Bideford and Bude is a definite Morgan Three Wheeler route. It swoopsfcrossAH1 and sweeps to show off its spectacular bucolic rural views peppered with little white houses, patchwork greenery and winding lanes to the sea. Never too fast, never too busy, always a delight. This is what the Morgan was built for.

As I was passing through one of the small Cornish villages my neighbour had tried to flag me down for a cream tea. Missed him. Im so used to the waving now I’ve become ‘wave blind’.

We had once lived in a part of the country in which it took 2 hours to do 26 miles. Twenty Six temper frayed miles every dismal, dreary evening. Own a Morgan Three Wheeler there? No thanks. Well, unless driving  between 01:00 and 04:00 in the morning (roadworks permitting) appeals.

Had Sir John Betjeman written his 1937 poem about the Thames Valley today he would probably be arrested for incitement. His calls for  a friendly destruction would be no defence against the ‘gob on a stick’ PC liberal elite.

My parents (both octogenarians) hear the Morgan M3Wrumble up the road and stop outside but  don’t answer the door as they don’t hear the doorbell. Quite right, I guess I could be anybody….

Zombie Apocalypse

After all the gnashing and wailing post Brexit by those who think democracy is optional and in anticipation of the Zombie apocalypse predicted by the Chancellor, new headlamp bulbs seemed like a good idea.

Fakes and Replicas

I gave up trying to find genuine bulbs for sale on eBay. The idea of fake headlamp bulbs seemed so bizarre I wondered if the whole notion was perhaps a double bluff put about by those wishing to charge more.

The irony is, the Lucas Tribar’s sold by Morgan are in fact replicas. Lucas having ceased trading 20 years ago.

So, after fitting real bulbs to my replica headlamps, I ran some crude comparison tests. They are definitely brighter and slightly whiter than standard without being obviously modern. However, if I had paid the full RRP I probably would have been disappointed by the end result. It may be a while before I try them at night.

Real World?

I have been emailed a few times and asked  “Has anything gone wrong with your Morgan Three Wheeler that you haven’t  put in this blog?”. “Where are the tales of woe I’ve read about on the forums?”. All I can say is, its all here for good or bad. The thing is, the good is such a rush that the bad is quickly forgotten. Forums are a clearing house for the bad and anonymous contributors, are sometimes not all they seem. #MadAsABoxOfFrogs
